A
Courtesan was a woman in the 15th – 20th century who at the very
least came from an upper-middle class family; most came from wealthy
or noble families, but weren’t royalty. These women were allowed
to be educated and learned about the finer things in life: art,
poetry, opera, and wine. Courtesans were well –
educated and worldly – aside from their physical attributes, it was
their wit and personality that set them apart from regular women.
They became the companions at social events to men of wealth, power,
and royalty. Some of the most famous women in royal circles, such
as Madame De Pompadour, were courtesans and played a vital role in
shaping social trends.
